The Finishing Trades Institute of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades has written a comprehensive guide, “Recruitment, Retention and Marketing of Apprentices: For a Strong Future Workforce,” which can be a great resource for any Registered Apprenticeship program. The guide is easy to read and has lots of good information including current and future labor force data, outreach strategies particularly to women and middle and high school students and tips on using social media to recruit young apprentices. It also has a valuable section on the recruitment process. Thanks to the FTI for sharing their manual.

The National Training Institute was started in 1990 and was known as the “Instructor Training Institute.” The initial purpose of the Instructor Training Institute was to professionally train instructors teaching IBEW Apprentices and Journeyworkers. The instructor training program employs Professional Educators from different colleges and universities from throughout the United States. The I Group classes are called Professional Education classes because of the format and educators used to deliver the training.

The Office of Apprenticeship (OA) has been providing technical assistance to the German Embassy, German-American manufacturing companies and the German American Chamber of Commerce to assist with the implementation of the German Skills Initiative. This initiative encourages German companies to work together with government, workforce and education agencies to address issues related to a shortage of skilled workers in the United States and identify best practices and training providers that are meeting the workforce needs of German companies, often implementing a version of the German dual system.
