Machinists promote training for aerospace jobs

There’s a story that’s told at Boeing, about a long-time Machinist who spent decades of his career working in Renton building landing gear for 737s. He finally retired, after long years of service. And shortly thereafter, inspectors on the 737 line started finding problems with the landing gear. Time went by, the problems kept cropping up – to the point that it was starting to affect delivery schedules – when someone got the idea to bring the recently retired Machinist back to see if he could figure out the problem. Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC) Facilitates $275,000 in Funding to Build the Inland Northwest Aerospace Technology Center (INATC)

The Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC), developer of Washington State registered aerospace and advanced manufacturing apprenticeship programs, announces that it has facilitated allocation of $275,000 in funding to support capital planning for building the Inland Northwest Aerospace Technology Center (INATC) that will be located near Spokane International Airport and house aerospace technology programs offered through Spokane Community College (SCC). AJAC also drove the distribution of $60,000 to this project in 2010 for equipment.

Despite Economy, Manufacturers Are Struggling To Find Skilled Workers

Nearly one-third of manufacturers report some level of shortages today and over one-half report shortages for skilled production workers and engineers according to a survey conducted by Deloitte Consulting, The Manufacturing Institute and Oracle. Larry Buhl, for Yahoo! HotJobs, Yahoo! HotJobs writes about the newest jobs. He states, "The latest directory of job titles from Occupational Information Network (O*Net) features a variety of new entries that many people have never heard before. Some of these jobs -- at least the duties -- have been around in some form for a while. What's new is a "professional pathway" for these careers, according to employment expert and author Laurence Shatkin. "O*Net officially recognizes job titles once there is a critical mass of workers in those jobs and a clear road map for attaining the positions."
