The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW) and the National Career Pathways Network (NCPN) have released a joint publication, Thriving in Challenging Times: Connecting Education to Economic Development Through Career Pathways. This resource highlights successful career pathway models that create relevant, challenging learning environments for students and are designed to increase American employers' access to highly-skilled, qualified workers. Thriving in Challenging Times profiles 17 local and two statewide career pathways programs in multiple industry sectors, documenting the challenges, strategies, results, and business engagement each partnership has experienced.

The Department of Energy has announced the availability of $100 million in funding from the Recovery Act to support workforce training for the electric power industry. On Tuesday, Feb. 16, President Obama visited and toured the NECA / IBEW Local 26 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee facility, located in Lanham MD., and spoke about the importance of skilled labor in helping the U.S. transition to cleaner energy sources.
WorkForce West Virginia has received a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to support the state’s efforts to provide “green-jobs” education and training.
“This grant will help out-of-work Kansans re-train for new jobs in the renewable energy sector,” said Governor Mark Parkinson, who announced the award today at the 2010 Workforce Summit in Topeka. “With these new resources, made possible through the American Recovery Act, Kansas will continue its role as a leader in renewable energy, with a ready and skilled workforce.”
