The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW) and the National Career Pathways Network (NCPN) have released a joint publication, Thriving in Challenging Times: Connecting Education to Economic Development Through Career Pathways. This resource highlights successful career pathway models that create relevant, challenging learning environments for students and are designed to increase American employers' access to highly-skilled, qualified workers. Thriving in Challenging Times profiles 17 local and two statewide career pathways programs in multiple industry sectors, documenting the challenges, strategies, results, and business engagement each partnership has experienced.
This report is an environmental scan of the impact of recent policies and investments supporting “green jobs” on current and potential Registered Apprenticeship and other labor management training programs. The scan highlights the trends, activities, and changes that are underway in several key industries that will likely make up a significant portion of the emerging green economy.
The Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) will be hold its 2009 annual Summit on October 7 - 9 in Indianapolis. The theme for this year’s Summit is “Get the Most from Your Energy Workforce Development Investment.” The Summit is geared toward human resources, technical training, operations, community relations, workforce planning and workforce development professionals who are interested in the energy-related industries.
The Department of Energy has announced the availability of $100 million in funding from the Recovery Act to support workforce training for the electric power industry. This initiative will expand job creation and career advancement opportunities associated with smart grid and electricity transmission projects and will help establish training programs for workers in the utility industry and electrical manufacturing sectors who will play a key role in modernizing the country's electrical grid.

The construction industry has been hit hard by the recession, but that hasn’t discouraged people like Rusty Knorr from seeking retraining in the building trades. After the 45-year-old former bicycle mechanic was laid off from his job at REI last year, he enrolled in Seattle Central Community College’s Cabinetmaking and Fine Woodworking program.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) held a webinar recently on its current efforts to develop a suite of national guidelines for the work and workforce involved in residential energy-efficiency retrofits, such as glazing replacements and installations. Benjamin Goldstein, project lead for the National Residential Retrofit Guidelines (NRRG) at EERE, led the presentation.

On January 12 and 13, 2010, the Office of Apprenticeship (OA) held two listening sessions on three areas of focus facing Registered Apprenticeship over the next year. The listening sessions, held for National Labor Leaders on January 12, 2010, and for Employers and Industry Associations on January 13, 2010, focused on Green Jobs, Healthcare, and Other High Growth Industries; Pre-Apprenticeship; and Partnerships with the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and the Education system. In addition, on June 11, 2010, OA held one additional public webinar which specifically focused on Pre-apprenticeship. As a follow up, OA has issued a report to highlight the comments, observations and major themes that surfaced during the sessions, which will be used to help guide its strategies around these key areas.
