21st Century Vision for Registered Apprenticeship

During the Summer of 2012, the Secretary of Labor challenged the Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship (ACA) to develop recommendations that leverage the Registered Apprenticeship model and its system of over 250,000 employers, joint labor-management organizations, and industry and educational partners to help ensure America stays competitive in today's global economy. Through months of hard work, the ACA developed the "Shared Vision for Increasing Opportunity, Innovation, and Competitiveness for American Workers and Employers: A Report from the Secretary of Labor’s Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship.” This report reflects their recommendations for advancing Registered Apprenticeship into the 21st Century. The National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC), created over 68 years ago, has developed into possibly the largest electrical apprenticeship and training program of its kind. Hundreds line up outside carpenters union hoping to land apprenticeship in lottery

Some of the 300 who had camped out Sunday were hoping to fill one of the 750 slots in the New York City District Council of Carpenters apprentice program, which has room for 500 for carpenters, 150 for dock builders and 100 for floor coverers. Workers are chosen through a lottery system and some of them have been in line since Monday.

German Skills Initiative One-Pager

The Office of Apprenticeship (OA) has been providing technical assistance to the German Embassy, German-American manufacturing companies and the German American Chamber of Commerce to assist with the implementation of the German Skills Initiative. This initiative encourages German companies to work together with government, workforce and education agencies to address issues related to a shortage of skilled workers in the United States and identify best practices and training providers that are meeting the workforce needs of German companies, often implementing a version of the German dual system.
