The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW) and the National Career Pathways Network (NCPN) have released a joint publication, Thriving in Challenging Times: Connecting Education to Economic Development Through Career Pathways. This resource highlights successful career pathway models that create relevant, challenging learning environments for students and are designed to increase American employers' access to highly-skilled, qualified workers. Thriving in Challenging Times profiles 17 local and two statewide career pathways programs in multiple industry sectors, documenting the challenges, strategies, results, and business engagement each partnership has experienced.

This is a study ETA commissioned by Robert Lerman of the Urban Institute and American University, “The Benefits and Challenges of Registered Apprenticeship: The Sponsors’ Perspective.” Findings show that 97 percent of Registered Apprenticeship sponsors—employers and labor-management programs alike—are highly satisfied with the model and would recommend it to other businesses. More than 80 percent of sponsors say that they use Registered Apprenticeship to meet their need for skilled workers. Another 72 percent say that Registered Apprenticeship helps them show which workers have needed skills; and 68 percent feel that the model raises productivity, strengthens worker morale and pride and improves worker safety. Few other publicly funded workforce programs have this level of satisfaction from employers and labor-management partnerships.

Three . two . one. and with that the ribbon was cut signifying the opening of the Southwest Regional Apprentice School at Naval Air Station, North Island in San Diego, Calif. on Wednesday, Aug. 11. The school, which will support an inaugural class of 24 apprentices, officially begun classes Aug. 16. The apprentice school is a partnership between Naval Sea Systems Command’s Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility and the Southwest Regional Maintenance Center, along with Naval Air Systems Command’s Fleet Readiness Center Southwest and Southwestern College.

Update: On July 26, 2010 - The State of Michigan's Chief Workforce Officer and Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth Acting Director Andy Levin announced that the State of Michigan will increase support for specific apprenticeship programs from $1,000 to $5,000 per apprentice to better meet the workforce needs of Michigan employers.

On January 12 and 13, 2010, the Office of Apprenticeship (OA) held two listening sessions on three areas of focus facing Registered Apprenticeship over the next year. The listening sessions, held for National Labor Leaders on January 12, 2010, and for Employers and Industry Associations on January 13, 2010, focused on Green Jobs, Healthcare, and Other High Growth Industries; Pre-Apprenticeship; and Partnerships with the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and the Education system. In addition, on June 11, 2010, OA held one additional public webinar which specifically focused on Pre-apprenticeship. As a follow up, OA has issued a report to highlight the comments, observations and major themes that surfaced during the sessions, which will be used to help guide its strategies around these key areas.
Pure Power Technologies, a Navistar company, has announced its sponsorship of a federally recognized apprenticeship program for its employees. Apprenticeship Carolina™, a division of the South Carolina Technical College System, began working with Pure Power Technologies in the initial stages of their start-up in South Carolina and assisted in establishing apprenticeships for three occupations: Engineering Technician, Assembly and Test Technician, and Components Technician. Midlands Technical College will deliver the education portion of these apprenticeships. Education supplements on-the-job training in a registered apprenticeship.
