Michigan Devotes $1M to New Apprentices

The following is a message from Andy Levin: Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth Deputy Director Andy Levin today announced that Michigan will devote $1 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) to create the Michigan Registered Apprenticeship Pilot (MRAP) program. MRAP funds will provide incentives to employers who partner with their local Michigan Works! agencies to sponsor 1,000 new apprentices in U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) registered apprenticeships.

State launches program for retraining workers

In an effort to encourage more employers to create apprenticeships, the state of Michigan set aside $1 million of the stimulus money coming through its Workforce Investment Act fund to create the Michigan Registered Apprenticeship Pilot program, the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth announced last month. The program is set to launch Aug. 1.

Skilled workers needed for solar push

Dow Corning Corp. CEO Stephanie Burns applauded Bay County efforts to increase the number of students attending college, and said the region will need such skilled workers as Dow Corning and other companies increase their focus on solar power technologies. "The impact will reverberate for generations," Burns said Tuesday night at the Bay Area Community Foundation's "Faces of Philanthropy" banquet at the Doubletree Hotel. "There's a good chance that these young collegians will stay in our community."

US Dept of Labor Announces Geospatial Technology Competency Model

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration announced the release of an industry competency model for geospatial technology. There are now 16 models available on the Competency Model Clearinghouse available through the department’s One-Stop Career Centers website. The Geospatial Technology Competency Model has been developed by researching and analyzing publicly available resources, existing skill standards, competency-based curricula and certifications to provide an employer-driven framework of the skills needed for success in geospatial technology.

Secretary Solis applauds union's green training initiative

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis commended the Laborers' International Union of North America today for training workers to get green jobs. The construction workers union, with about 9,000 to 10,000 local members, is training members and non-members at its Michigan Laborers' Training & Apprenticeship Institute to build environmentally friendly transportation systems, energy infrastructure and green buildings.

ARRA Funds to Support 1000 New Apprentices: Michigan

Michigan will devote $1 million from ARRA (Recovery Act) to create the Michigan Registered Apprenticeship Pilot (MRAP) program. MRAP, which began Aug. 1, 2009, offers employers a $1,000 incentive — $500 when the USDOL Apprenticeship Office certifies the start of the apprenticeship and $500 after the apprentice has completed six months of the training.
