Apprenticeships Could Be Gateway to Middle Class

Great article from Jan. 12 on the US News & World Report site touts Apprenticeship as the “gateway” to the middle class. The article shares the story of apprentices working their way through a Mechatronics program with Siemens that results in an Associates degree and a job earning $55K a year. UK Launches "Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design"

A new qualification aimed at increasing the number of young people seeking a career in manufacturing has been launched in classrooms across England. The Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD) is available to pupils and students aged 14 to 19. It has been developed to sit alongside traditional academic qualifications such as GCSEs and A-Levels. The qualification is being delivered by consortia of local schools, colleges and employers, allowing students to divide their time between classroom, college and real work environments.

The Manufacturing Workforce: A Deepening Crisis Survey: Shortage of Qualified Production Workers is Getting Worse

The Manufacturing Leadership Council’s Board of Governors authorized a survey of the Manufacturing industry to help assess the current state of the workforce and identify key trends related to acquiring skilled labor, and project how the trends may play out in the next five to 10 years. The results find that the issue of attracting people with the right skills to manufacturing jobs, both hourly and salaried, is not only real, but is growing more severe despite numerous efforts to improve recruitment of skilled workers.

German Skills Initiative One-Pager

The Office of Apprenticeship (OA) has been providing technical assistance to the German Embassy, German-American manufacturing companies and the German American Chamber of Commerce to assist with the implementation of the German Skills Initiative. This initiative encourages German companies to work together with government, workforce and education agencies to address issues related to a shortage of skilled workers in the United States and identify best practices and training providers that are meeting the workforce needs of German companies, often implementing a version of the German dual system.

Nat'l Training Institute, Master Instructor Cert

The National Training Institute was started in 1990 and was known as the “Instructor Training Institute.” The initial purpose of the Instructor Training Institute was to professionally train instructors teaching IBEW Apprentices and Journeyworkers. The instructor training program employs Professional Educators from different colleges and universities from throughout the United States. The I Group classes are called Professional Education classes because of the format and educators used to deliver the training.
