The Department of Energy has announced the availability of $100 million in funding from the Recovery Act to support workforce training for the electric power industry. This initiative will expand job creation and career advancement opportunities associated with smart grid and electricity transmission projects and will help establish training programs for workers in the utility industry and electrical manufacturing sectors who will play a key role in modernizing the country's electrical grid.

This learning and action-planning session is being held as a follow up to the national ReEmployment Works! Summit held in Baltimore, Maryland from January 27 – 29, 2009. This Region I follow-up Forum is designed to build on the lessons learned at the Baltimore Summit; continue to develop solutions to identified challenges; and provide the Region I workforce system with the opportunity to develop action plans related to their reemployment efforts, particularly in the context of their implementation of the economic stimulus investments.
This interactive forum is built upon key reemployment principles and topical areas of interest that were received at the ReEmployment Works! Summit held in Baltimore from January 27-29, 2009 and the new American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) challenges. The content of this forum is customized around the feedback received from our State Planning Committee, which consisted of key leaders and practitioners from Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. The ARRA challenges workforce systems to help accelerate America's economic recovery through effective reemployment and training strategies. This forum will provide attendees with the opportunity to address challenges impacting their reemployment efforts and plans for long-term success and sustainability. Come and speak with experts and colleagues about the different strategies and action plans that have been developed surrounding reemployment efforts and implementation of economic recovery investments!
The Office of Apprenticeship with the states of Kansas and Washington will highlight areas of TEGL 14-08 that incorporate Registered Apprenticeship into policies regarding the activities authorized under the Recovery Act and the Workforce Investment Act. The Webinar will highlight those areas and provide examples from the states of Kansas and Washington on state and local registered apprenticeship activities that can and should be funded within TEGL 14-08. Areas to be discussed will include: * An Overview of TEGL 14-08 - Specifically areas where Registered Apprenticeship is identified by the Office of Apprenticeship Administrator John Ladd. * State-wide Policy and Strategic Planning -Liz Smith will discuss Washington State's strategies that utilize Registered Apprenticeship. This is based on state evaluations showing Registered Apprenticeship tops all workforce programs in wages and outcomes. * Resource Alignment - Linda Sorrell will highlight Kansas strategies to leverage resources through collaborations between the public workforce system and Registered Apprenticeship. * Service Delivery - Linda Sorrell will show how Kansas has incorporated Registered Apprenticeship into the pubic workforce system’s service delivery operations as part of daily business. * Linda Sorrell and Liz Smith will highlight areas where Registered Apprenticeship and the public workforce system are addressing the skill needs of businesses within the green technologies; and highlight areas where pre-apprenticeships are being utilized to help create a pipeline of workers prepared with 21st century skills.

With CNMI’s economy on the verge of new growth, and the potential of CNMI’s worker needs it is imperative for the community to jointly support a program that will provide a career path directed at high paying, skilled occupations for CNMI’s youth. The intent of this system is to place high school juniors in part time apprenticeship positions during the summer with expectations that they will continue training for the same jobs after high school graduation. At the same time meet the needs to train skilled workers in CNMI.
