Nevada Apprenticeship

Nevada

 

As the next state in my review of apprenticeship in the states across America, Nevada has provided the following information.

 

Nevada is a regulatory Apprenticeship Agency, with seven council members, representing employers, labor and public.

 

Currently Nevada has 90 registered programs with 4,500 active apprentices registered with the State Apprenticeship Council and 12 federally registered apprenticeship programs for a total of 102 programs.  Due to Nevada having one of the highest unemployment rates in the Nation, Nevada has experienced a 60% decrease in the number of active apprentices over the past three years.

 

Although, Nevada has experienced a down turn in apprenticeship activity in the construction industry due to the economy, Nevada is starting to see an increase in interest in the renewable energy industry.

 

The programs registered with the SAC represent; construction, manufacturing, energy,  retail, child care and government agencies.

 

Approximately 90% of all registered apprentices receive college credit for their apprenticeship related supplemental training from one of the community colleges in the state.  This enables an apprentice to receive not only their Journeyman credentials, but also gives them the option to take additional studies to receive an Associate of Applied Science.

 

Nevada has one YouthBuild grantee and one Job Corps Center that address the training needs of the youth.

 

Nevada recently appointed a new Labor Commissioner, who will also serve as the SAA Director.  Nevada SAA has one Apprenticeship and Training Representative Lleta Brown that works in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor, Nevada Office of Apprenticeship State Director Colleen Henry and Doug Howell to promote and service apprenticeship programs in Nevada.
